Causation A Term You Need to Know
Causation refers to the relationship between an event (the cause) and a second event (the effect), where the second event is a result of the first. In other words, causation suggests that there is a direct and causal link between the cause and effect such that the cause led to the effect. Establishing causality is a central goal of many fields, including epidemiology, psychology, and economics, as it allows researchers to understand the underlying mechanisms that produce a particular effect. However, establishing causality can be challenging, and requires a number of rigorous methodologies and statistical tests to determine if the observed relationship between two events is truly causal.
